I'm talking about your HAPPINESS.
I know what it’s like to feel misaligned, unfulfilled or downright unhappy at work.
You wonder if there’s a way out – but you have responsibilities, you have a family or loved ones depending on you, you have to pay the rent or the mortgage, you need predictability and you can’t go off chasing your dreams when there’s so much real life going on around you.
Sound familiar?
While I can’t deny there’s endless truth in all those statements – there’s also a truth at play that you are not recognising. Ready for it?
You are not taking responsibility for your own happiness.
You're looking after everyone and everything else, but where does your happiness and wellbeing come in?
You’ll think about it when the bills are all paid or when you’re in retirement?!
It takes courage to take responsibility for your own happiness. It takes courage to stand up for your own wellbeing especially when you've become accustomed to being bottom of the priority list.
I find there’s a misconception out there that career change or career progression in your life is some sort of black and white affair.
Today I work in X role/business/industry, tomorrow I work in Y.
I don't have to tell you that life is not like that.
To make real change and to develop and grow as a person takes time, an unfolding of chapters – like a great book.
It’s an exciting journey you can embark on WHILE you are paying the bills for now.
WHILE you’re working towards your dreams and goals, your current experience will also transform – it will be reframed and your perspective will shift in ways you can’t foresee - simply by taking responsibility for your own happiness.
Responsibility breeds empowerment and motivation within you.
You don’t have to make all the changes at once. Just one step at a time.
Here are some common scenarios/perspectives on this that I see time and time again:
1. You're used to looking after everyone else. You're not used to putting yourself first, not used to prioritising your own happiness so it feels strange, it feels selfish to even think about it. I have one thing to say to you: attend to your own oxygen mask first!
2. Now is not the right time, I will do something about it, next week, next month, next year. By leaving your own happiness and contentment in the some day caterory, you are pushing it away from you. Frustration and resistance builds, it becomes harder to embark on the journey and your wellbeing is hit on a daily basis.
3. That's just life, sure most people don't like their jobs, just deal with it - that's just how it is. Shut up and put up. NO !!! You are the only person living your life! We are talking about your precious time....your everyday experience of life ! Did you know the average person will spend 90,000 hours over the course of their life at work? That's a lot of your time, focus, energy, input and effort!
Which of these resonates with you?
