From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How Embracing My Sensitivity Changed Everything

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to understanding people - their thoughts, emotions, dreams and struggles.

I have always felt things deeply, noticed the unspoken, and sensed the emotions of others as if they were my own. But for much of my life, I didn’t have the language to describe this experience, let alone understand that it was a strength.

I felt different growing up and as a budding young professional. It wasn’t just that I thought deeply, felt emotions intensely, or needed more time to process the world around me - it was that I often felt like an outsider, trying to fit into a world that wasn’t built for me - one that seemed perfectly fine for others but left me drained and overstimulated.

The rigid structures of traditional workplaces, the relentless pressure to conform, the emphasis on ‘hard skills’ over emotional intelligence and the expectation to “toughen up” clashed with the essence of who I am.

I pushed through, often doubting myself, I couldn’t understand why I felt so drained, so misaligned, so utterly out of place.

Does this resonate with you?

Discovering My Sensitivity

I first discovered the term "empath" in my early 20s, and it was like a lightbulb moment. I learned about the flow of my energies and the power of meditation, energy cleansing and energy protection.

Suddenly, so much of my experience made sense - the way I could feel the emotions of others so deeply, how I was so attuned to subtle dynamics in group settings, and why I needed so much time alone to recharge.

Being an empath is like experiencing the world in high definition; it is like having an internal radar for energy, emotions and even hidden truths.

At first, dealing with it all felt like a burden, as if I was constantly absorbing the world's energy with no filter and it felt like I had no choice. I had to learn to release energy that was not mine and was weighing heavily on me (this is a life-long challenge for empaths).

But my endless curiosity for psychology and human behaviour and my training in counselling and coaching led me to observe and question my experience with curiosity and compassion rather than fear - and this changed everything.

Then I discovered the term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and the work of Dr. Elaine Aron, and everything clicked into place. I had the same validating, head nodding experience as thousands of others when I read her book The Highly Sensitive Person.

Learning about high sensitivity was like being handed a missing piece of my identity. I realised I wasn’t weak, I am just wired differently. And this wiring, when understood and nurtured, holds immense power.

(If you're wondering if there's a difference between HSP and empath?

I explore it HERE)

I started on a journey of self-discovery that led me to explore coaching approaches, healing modalities, energy practices and entrepreneurship.

As I learned more and immersed myself in the research, I realised that my deep sensitivity allows me to connect with people in a meaningful way, to understand their struggles, and to offer genuine support. I realised I had a very unique set of skills. It made sense that my life and studies up until that point was based on human behvaiour, empathy, communication and the arts!

I learned how to honour my needs, protect my energy and design a life that aligned with my true nature.

The more I learned, the more I realised just how many other people were out there struggling with the same challenges I had faced - feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, stuck in draining or misaligned jobs or environments, questioning their worth.

That’s when I knew I had to do this work.

I didn’t want another HSP or empath to go through life feeling like they were ‘too much’ and ‘not enough’ at the same time. I didn’t want another empath to burn out from absorbing the emotions of those around them. I wanted to create a space where deep feelers and thinkers could embrace their nature, tap into their strengths, and create lives that truly align with who they are.

Free-Range Human

Around the same time (in my 20s), I read Be a Free Range Human by Marianne Cantwell which added to the inspiration I needed to embrace my unique thinking, my outside-the-box approach to life. It gave me permission to embrace the fact that I was never meant to follow a traditional, rigid career path.

The idea of designing my own work around my strengths, values, and natural rhythms was exhilarating. I realised that success wasn’t about forcing myself to fit into a mold - it was about creating a life that fit me.

That realisation set me free; it changed everything - it was the first step toward true alignment in my life and work.

Sensitivity serves a hugely important role in society.

I spent years working in education, career guidance and personal development, helping people navigate career transitions, leadership challenges, and personal growth. But as I stepped more fully into my identity as an HSP and an empath, I realised my calling was deeper: to help other Highly Sensitive and Empathic individuals step into their power.

I saw first-hand how coaching provides the clarity, validation, and empowerment that so many creative, visionary HSPs desperately need. Traditional career paths and leadership models weren’t built with us in mind, and I wanted to change that. I wanted to show other sensitive souls that they could lead, thrive, and succeed - not by suppressing their sensitivity but by leveraging it.

Through my own experience and the feedback from insightful clients, I leaned in and began developing intuitive tools around identity alignment, energy management and I realised just how central this work is when it comes to career and/or business strategy.

We live in a society that traditionally prioritises and rewards speed over depth, logic over intuition and hustle over alignment.

But it's clearer than ever how much empathy matters, and how much humanity matters! The world needs highly sensitive people more than ever.

We are the deep thinkers, the change-makers, the creatives, the visionaries, the healers, the ones who bring empathy and innovation into every space we enter.

Recognising your high sensitivity and empathic abilitiy is not about being 'softer' somehow - you are firecely strong! Nor it is about judgment or separation from our non-hsp friends and colleagues. The majority of people are kind, compassionate, and loving people, doing their best with the tools they have. It is about recognising your innate skills as strength in this world, as a powerful force.

Our gift lies in how we experience and engage with the world. When we embrace our natural strengths, like deep empathy, emotional intelligence, intuitive leadership, and creative problem-solving, we step into our true purpose.

Sensitivity serves an essential role in society. We are the compassionate advisors, leaders, communicators and healers. When we are empowered, we bring insight, understanding and connection to a world that deeply needs us. Our ability to see beneath the surface, to communicate with nuance and to create spaces of belonging and inclusion is not just valuable - it’s vital.

The more we lean into our strengths, the more we can shape a world where authenticity, kindness and emotional intelligence thrive.

So where's the challenge?

Many HSPs don’t yet realise their value. They’ve internalised messages that tell them their sensitivity is a weakness.

My mission is to rewrite that story.

I coach because I believe in a new way of working, living and leading - one that honours energy, intuition, creativity and authenticity. I want my clients to see that their depth, their emotions and their way of experiencing the world holds strength, value and significant purpose.

My approach is about embodying sensitivity in meaningful ways so HSPs and empaths can apply their innate skills and strengths and make an impact; in their corner of the world, in their industry, creating a ripple effect that then expands in an exponential way beyond them.

Call me an idealist?! I wouldn't blame you.

Idealism and sensitivity are deeply connected because when you feel the world so intensely, you care just as deeply.

HSPs and empaths don’t just see what is, they see what could be. Their heightened awareness of emotions, injustice and unfulfilled potential fuels a natural longing for a better world. This is why so many HSPs are purpose-driven in their work.

And idealism is not naivety - HSPs consider everything on a deep level and they naturally pause to consider their actions - the opposite of naive behaviour.

Idealism is a strength - any and all hope in today's modern society is surely a good thing. It’s the driving force behind change-makers, visionaries, and healers.

While others may accept things as they are, idealists dare to dream of something better and, more importantly, take action to make it a realilty.

Step Into Your Power!

Every time I see a client step into their power, advocate for themselves and build a life that reflects their true essence, I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

Seeing a fellow HSP or empath finally recognise their worth, leave an unfulfilling job, start a business that aligns with their values, or simply breathe easier knowing they don’t have to fight against their nature anymore - that is what propels me forward and keeps my inspiration high in my business.

This isn’t just a career for me. It’s a calling. A movement. A mission.

My work is about empowerment. It’s about giving highly sensitive and empathic individuals the tools, the confidence and the permission to live life on their own terms.

If you’re an HSP or empath struggling to find your place in the world, know this:

You are not broken. You are not alone. You are powerful beyond measure.

And when you step into that power, you don’t just change your own life - you change the world.

If you’re in need of support in your life or career,

you’re in the right place.

Let’s reimagine what’s possible together! 💪✨
